01 Why worship?
Readings: Genesis 1: 24-2:4; Acts 17: 22-28; St John 4: 21-26.
Psalm 95: 1-7 (or CH4 20)
These sermons were preached in 1988 from the pulpit of one of Scotland's most historic churches, Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, at a time when a radical refurbishment of the interior was about to take place. Although this is reflected in the scope and content of the sermons, they stand also as a comprehensive statement about worship in its fullness, a statement to inform the necessary renewal in worship that must take place in every era. It is a renewal which has since made Greyfriars a model for enterprising and innovative approaches to worship, congregational life, and in outreach to the community in which it is set.
