Dr Louden reports the history of the movement from the mid-nineteenth century which has set out to uphold a sense of order within public worship. The foundation and continuing history of the Society takes his attention, and a survey of the Society’s publications.

Short biographical notices by different authors are appended of three key figures in the early years of the Society – the Revd Robert Herbert Storey (1835-1907), the Revd George Campbell (1827-1904) and the Revd James Cameron Lees (1834-1913) (pp.18-27). Photographs are also within this volume, also of the Revd G W Sprott.
